(song descriptions compiled from album reviews)

1. Chippin' Away"

Chippin Away" sends the album storming out of the gate playing around with an up-tempo ska rhythm. The horn section adds the right amount of punch to get the listener immediately engaged.

This is the sort of song that makes you want to get up and dance and is a great start to the album. There's a rough edge to the music on Wars Ragin that is appealing. It's not garage, exactly, but it has some of that same Lo-Fi charm.

Vandenberg's vocals however are more identifiable with the lighter side of '90s alternative rock; think the music of The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones with the vocals of They Might Be Giants.

Lyrics:
Verse 4x [ B / A / B / F# ]
When I woke up and looked around, To see what happened to me
All my energy shaken aside, I was sure glad I'm still alive
Dream in the night everlasting until, We see the results of the bill
Willfully know that the echoes we show, won't lead from this treacherous road

[B / B / A / A] [F# / C# / F# / C#]

Chorus 4x [C# - A / B / F# - C# / E ]
And We're Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible
Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible

Verse 4x [ B / A / B / F# ]
As I woke up and moved around, To see what happened to be
all our energy pushing aside, what we thought would be right
Taking a chance with a lengthening race, it surely will show on our face
Helping to live with whatever we give, far away from our own prior place

[B / B / A / A / B / B / A / A] [F# / C# / F# / C#]

Chorus 4x [C# - A / B / F# - C# / E ]
And we're Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible
Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible

Bridge 4x [F# / C#]
As our thoughts get older becoming bolder, then finding from place to place
Some of those tried but failed to erase, with an effort to remain where we gave
The words that taught them about the clues, when reordered were seldom used
Still their words are teaching us the truth, Once discovered is still of use, But We're

Chorus 4x [C# - A / B / F# - C# / E ]
Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible
Chippin' Away, Just a piece at a time
Little by little, change becoming visible

[F# / C#] Bridge Instrumental

Chorus with Vocals 4x [C# - A / B / F# - C# / E ]

2. I Stepped Into the Shade
The second song, "I Stepped Into the Shade", begins with some mellow horns and a slightly melancholy feel. It's a sweetly solitary song, meaning that it's a good song to listen to when you're by yourself, feeling a little bit peaceful, a little bit lonely, and in need of a good tune.

Even on songs such as "I Stepped Into The Shade", where Abe layers a lot of instrumentation to build a full sound there is still an aspect to it that is rough and primitive.

Vandenberg's voice is truly unique, having an ability to be melodramatic and descriptive, as well as harmonious and fun to sing with, as in "I Stepped Into the Shade" or "What we Crave."

Lyrics:
VERSE 2x [ C / C (A Bass) / C (F Bass) / C (G Bass) ]
It was a common goal, tell parted souls
the game we chose, the rolling dice that show
All the way we have gone
with the wind and the sky, we still carried our lives

Chorus 3x [ F / Am / C / G ]
And stepped into the shade, the light was only inches away. While in this
Brightest day, finding ways, to keep from the heat of noon
Finding the move, was not through, was not through

VERSE 2x [ C / C (A Bass) / C (F Bass) / C (G Bass) ]
Passing bells, for parting souls
A game we chose, cause never saying no
All the way we have gone
It must not be for all, while it's taking us all

Chorus 3x [ F / Am / C / G ]
I stepped into the shade, that light was only inches away. As the
Shadows wait, as though were tame, kept me from the heat of noon
And I saw through, shade to bright, blinding light

Bridge 6x [D-C/ G]
Awaiting Silencing Light
Away from moments that hide in life
Away from Silencing Light
A weak moment had tried to hide
Awakes in Silencing Light
Awaken Silence with Light

Chorus 3x [ F / Am / C / G ]
I stepped into the shade, that light was only inches away. Until the
Lighting fades, ending day
And soon seeing the moon, as though it were new
Yes I do still do

VERSE INST 2x
[ C / C (A Bass) ]
[ C (F Bass) / C (G Bass) ] [C] End

3. Rusty's Game (instrumental)

4. The Prestige
"The Prestige" is very catchy; a bit frenetic. Vandenberg occasionally reminds me of the same urgent energy that drove some of the early They Might Be Giants recordings. That nervous momentum is very apparent on The Prestige. It's a high energy song that is guaranteed to get people moving.

Lyrics:

Verse [ G / Eb9 – D9 ]
To, question why, might, still, get exciting
Whispers wishing for jobs, we shout to, say we're strong
The will to, Sing a new song anyway
There somewhere in between
The Pledge, Turn, Prestige, Magic Tricks

Chorus [ C / Bb ]
Indeed shall, make it in your mind now
Even if not knowing quite how
The tipping points are leading
More I'm leaning

Verse [ G / Eb9 – D9 ]
To, question why, might, still, need a reason
Or we'll choose cause we'll be strong, or not to breathe at all
Without will, to sing a new song everyday
There somewhere in between
The Pledge, Turn, Prestige, Magic Tricks

Chorus [ C / Bb ]
Indeed shall, make it in your mind now
Even if not knowing quite how
Were told the reason meaning
More then seeming

Bridge [ Ab / Ab / C / C ]
To make the same
As From a dream
Relearn our game

Instrumental Chorus and Bridge on Cues

Chorus [ C / Bb ]
One shall, pushing further than most,
Something Pleasant there that can show
Changing signs that almost, make me think that

Verse [ G / Eb9 – D9 ]
To, question why, might, still, get exciting
To, question why, might, still, get exciting
Still, get excited
There somewhere in between, the Pledge, Turn, Prestige
They're Magic Tricks Indeed, They're Magic Tricks Indeed

5. Wars Ragin
"Wars Ragin" is a delicious heartland-style rocker with big, jangly guitars and a chorus you canít help but hum along to. The theme is the ease with which we can wrap ourselves in our loves and forget about whatís going on in the world at large. "Wars Ragin" is a song with strong commercial potential.

While listening to Vandenberg sing about his everyday routine, you might miss the political nature of the lyrics ("I can't forget over there a war is ragin"). It's a stark contrast between innocuous instrumentation and trying to rationalize "funding fights while we claim that we're saving."

Lyrics:
Can't Forget the War's Ragin' (F# - Capo 1st Fret)

Intro [ C#7 / B7 / C#7 / B7 ]

Sit at home watching TV [F# / C#7]
Watch the news or a comedy [F# / B7]
Step out side, drive down the road, without [F# / C#7]
Worry that another car might explode, [F# / B7]

I can’t forget over there War is raging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
Sure don't see the War here that we're waging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]

With Trips to town to walk around [F# / C#7]
Getting coffee or checking email [F# / B7]
Talking with friends out on the street [F# / C#7]
Walking outside and living it safely [F# / B7]
So many faces I see, any given day, don’t seem [F# / C#7]
To think about, the wars that our country's [F# / B7]

Funding Fights while we claim that we're saving [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
We send the best giving them little rest and [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
While Here at Home some don't even think about it [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
I can’t forget our War’s are raging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]

All the Killing I put out of my mind [C#7 / B7]
Even though everything now here is fine [C#7 / B7]
It’s only a matter of time until [C#7 / B7]
What’s done in our game really hits home [C#7 / B7]

Until then how can we wonder suffering for it
[F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
Cause unlike those where War's raging, [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]

We’re still Driving home where there’s electricity [F# / C#7]
Having water from the faucet to drink, [F# / B7]v
Then read a book or have over company [F# / C#7]
Dream through the night and still, have a family [F# / B7]

I don’t forget that War's raging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
I won’t forget that Wars are raging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
I can't forget this is our War that's raging [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7]
All I'm Saying it's our Wars that we're Wagin [F# / C#7- B7] then Riff [F# / C#7- B7 / B7]

End [ C#7 / B7 / C#7 / B7 / F# (Ring) ]

6. Easy Life
Then there is a sort of fun intermezzo in the veracity of tone, one moment the world is on Abe's shoulders, the next heís relaxing enjoyin' it all in "Easy Life", despite its sort of ironic understanding of those who take advantage of him, ultimately the realization is positive, and one reflects on their own participation in helping to make the world a better place.

Others have likened his vocal style to Lou Reed, perhaps due to the barely affected tone he possesses while singing lines on "Easy Life" like "They bank on my apathy, they bank on my willing ignorance."

Lyrics:
I 'd like to live an easy life [A - E / B]
I’d like to take it all inside [A - E / B]
the lighter shift of brighter sides [A - E / B]
Could take it as an easy life [A - E / B]

And they bank on my apathy [F# - E / B]
They bank on my willing ignorance [F# - E / B]
If I’m Sitting Back, Sitting Back [F# - E / B]
Learning nothing about it myself [A - E / B]
Saying nothing about it myself [A - E / B]
Doing nothing about it myself [A - E / B]

I 'd like to live an easy life [A - E / B]
I like the place when we arrive [A - E / B]
Till shifting light from brighter signs [A - E / B]
Will take it on an easy life [A - E / B]

And they bank on my apathy [F# - E / B]
They bank on my willing ignorance [F# - E / B]
If I'm Sitting Back, Sitting Back [F# - E / B
Learning nothing about myself [A - E / B]
Saying nothing about it myself [A - E / B]
Doing nothing about it myself [A - E / B]

That's how we got here [E - D / B]
Drifting over the years [D - E / B]
Distraught that even those taking so long to stall [E - D / B]
Saw ghost town's making a place [D - E / B]

They bank on my apathy [F# - E / B]
And bank on my willing ignorance [F# - E / B]
If I'm Sitting Back, Sitting Back [F# - E / B
Learning nothing about myself [A - E / B]
Saying nothing about it myself [A - E / B]
Doing nothing about it myself [A - E / B

7. It's Not Just Me
"It's Not Just Me" starts off with some signature guitar work and has a slight Bad Religion punk undertone. Abe's solid voice really comes through in this song, giving the listener a new perspective on the album.

Lyrics:
It's Not Just Me INST. Twice [F# - D]3x then [A / A - G#]1x

I’ll never want this to end [F# - D / F# - D]
But for now we should let it begin [F# - D / F# - D]
I’ll never want this to end [F# - D / F# - D]
But for now we should let us Begin [F# - D / F# - D]

To then wondering what will change from yesterday [A - A# / B]

Begin [F# - D / F# - D]Let it
Begin [F# - D / F# - D]

[A - A# / B] And then wondering what will change from yesterday [A - A# / B]

[C#m / C#m / B / B] If I make the moments that I see
[C#m / C#m / B / B] And if you make the moments, that possibly
[C#m / C#m / (A#) B / B] Can take us to where we want to be

Were we to feel they’re focused and fair [A - A# / B]
We can stay there as long as we care [A - A# / B]
It’s not just me [A - A# / B]
It’s more than me [A - A# / B]
It’s not just me [A - A# / B]
It’s more than me [A - A# / B]

[F# / F# - D] (if we'd) Let it
Begin [F# / F# - D] Let it

Begin [F# - D / F# - D]Let it
Begin [F# - D / F# - D]Let it
Begin [F# - D / F# - D]

[A - A# / B] And then wondering what will change from yesterday
[A - A# / B] When we see how we've done it this way
[A - A# / B] A way that could make us all want to say
[A - A# / B] It’s not just me
[A - A# / B] It’s more than me
[A - A# / B] It’s not just me

I’ll never want this to end [F# - D / F# - D]
So for now I should let it Begin [F# - D / F# - D]
Then it's how we should [F# - D / F# - D]
So for now we should [F# - D / F# - D]
Ending [A / A - G# / F# END]

It satisfies lobby lies with delight [Fm - Ab / Db - Ab]
It stratifies statue like candle light[Fm - Ab / Db]

Chorus 4x [FM - Eb9 / Bb / FM - Cm7b5 / Bb7]
Unless giving some care to thoughts of grief, still showing some sudden display
A little work, a little play, it's a good day, then putting those games away
As laughter learns each earns hardened peace when we realize that we crave

It satisfies sacred souls with delight [Fm - Ab / Db - Ab]
It stratifies statue like ancient light [Fm - Ab / Db]

4x [FM - Eb9 / Bb / FM - Cm7b5 / Bb7]
And still giving some care to thoughts of grief, as this real life still craves
As laughter learned each earned hardened peace, still showing some sudden display
A little work, a little play, it's a good day, Then putting those games away
When we realize what we crave, then we realize that we crave

Bridge
[Db / F / Ab-Eb]

when we realize that we crave, then we realize what we crave

4x [Fm - Ab / Db - Ab] then END

9. That Was Safe
The ninth track, "That Was Safe", reminds a bit of My Morning Jacket, at least at the beginning. But that fades as soon as Abe begins to hit the high notes. "That Was Safe" is a bouncy tune; a song that you might want to start your day with.

Lyrics:
Verse [2x Ab Riff ] When I came to laugh for some hope
With nothing but the stump of it left
I armed myself against such bones
An emptiness that wasn't alone

Chorus 5x [Ab - Db9 / B] It seemed so strong, though I was young
That was not past, with the pain
There was no change creating strain
That Was Safe
That was Safe

Verse [2x Ab Riff] It's all so simple magnified it appears
As morning dreams still disappear
I feel the swirl, I feel that weight
Of abstract ideas that ache

Chorus 5x [Ab - Db9 / B ] It seemed so strong, though i was young
That was not past, with the pain
There was no change creating strain
That Was Safe
That was Safe

BRIDGE 2x [ Db - Bb / B - B / Ab - B / Bb - Bb ]
2x [ Db - Bb / B - Ab / B - Bb / Bb (half measure)]
As good a time as any it shows, Departure from scripted souls
In the wake its all-overhead high, maybe I don't want to be
If we had left those alone, it’s shown how history
Those mistakes are over its time, that’s politely rewinding

Verse 4x [Ab Riff]I can't explain it any other way
While often sleeping in till it's late
Thought it was fine, i had no right
To try and take everyone's side
Despite
It was a house in fallen decay
The water wasn't cleansing the name
Then a cloud alerted of rain, as though
Heavens were all that remained

Chorus 8x [Ab - Db9 / B ] It seemed so strong, though I was young
It would not last, as with the rain
Then there was change among the blame
And I had spoke of one for not too long
I let the name go, it’s not the soul
I have a mind to recognize,
That Was Safe
That was Safe

10. All of a Sudden
Abe saves another curveball for "All Of A Sudden", which sounds a bit like REM crashed the "Abe's Logic" party.

Lyrics:
Intro 2x [Bm - F# / Bm]

History’s actually yesterday [D(7) / A]
In repetition’s obscene way [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]
Just keeping mind how we choose [D(7) / A]
To repair what we lose [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]

We can take the time [D - A / Bm]
Now there’s not much time [Bm - A / Bm]
To make this right, and then [D - A / Bm (F# - A)]

All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
It’s all in sight [Bm -A / Bm]
All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
We all just might [D - A / Bm]
All of a sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
Find another right way out [Bm - (F# A) / Bm]

Mystery mistaken can betray [D(7) / A]
Complacency’s demeaning way [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]
Declining with some hidden truth [D(7) / A]
Slightly pushing to subdue [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]

Harmony blending with our play [D(7) / A]
Reasoning’s mistaken day[Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]
Just keeping mind how we lose [D(7) / A]
Our awareness of the ruse [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]

But, if we make up our mind [D - A / Bm]
While there’s not much time [Bm - A / Bm]
To make this right [D - A / Bm (F# - A)]

All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
It’s all in sight [Bm -A / Bm]
All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
We all just might [D - A / Bm]
All of a sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
Changing to lead the way out [Bm - (F# A) / Bm]

Inst. Verse

History’s written from today [D(7) / A]
With Complacency’s demeaning way [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]
Keeping mind on what we choose [D(7) / A]
With awareness of the ruse [Bm(7) / F#7(sus)]

But, if we make up our minds [D - A / Bm]
While there’s not much time [Bm - A / Bm]
To make this right [D - A / Bm (F# - A)]

All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
It’s all in sight [Bm -A / Bm]
All of the sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
We all just might [D - A / Bm]
All of a sudden [Bm - F#7 / Bm]
Changing to lead the way out [Bm - (F# A) / Bm]

11. I Want it to Stay
"Abe's Logic" corrects course and gets back to the feel-good rock with moderate to serious themes on "I Want It To Stay", which sounds like it would be a fantastic tune live.

Lyrics:
1: Intro [E7 / B7] Inst.

It's quite a view, at dawn you still knew
I found today, tomorrow is made
This day moves enjoyment that waits
